Provincial Fall Workshop
Sept 24, 2011-09-25 Jackfish Lodge, Cochin, Sk.
Fifty women from across the province attended the Provincial Fall Workshop held on Sept 24, 2011-09-25 at Jackfish Lodge, Cochin, Sk. The weather was perfect and the surrounding landscape showed all its splendour in gorgeous autumn colors.
President, Tillie Aessie welcomed everyone to the evening session of entertaining ourselves. Chantal Devine of Regina Diocese and Father Francis Hengen began with some ‘blooper’ quotes. Heather Oberhofer of Prince Albert Diocese read off some of her poetry re calving and women. Much to the delight of the members, we thank Heather for sharing her talent. Adelle Giblin, Margaret Schwab, Wanda Graham, and Naomi Selent performed a comical skit of a couple grieving their father(garbage man) when meeting with the Funeral Director. This was followed by the Regina Diocese staging “The Basic Black Dress” skit, with performer Yvonne Bachelu modeling the different characters accompanied by the Regina members singing. Interspersed throughout the evening were individuals who told a joke or story and Father Francis playing guitar and leading the singing of folk songs. The evening was enjoyed by all.
Saturday morning began with Spiritual Development chair, Jean Reader leading a prayer service Litany of Affirmation entitled ‘Living as Women Centered on Faith and Justice’ by role-modeling the Mission Statement of the CWL.
After introductions, Mary Nordick and Heather Kolla lead a Leadership Workshop. We were challenged to answer such questions as:
- Why do we need Leaders?
- What are the characteristics of Leaders?
- How do Leaders become leaders and
- Overcoming obstacles of why you can’t be a leader – most can be resolved.
- Envisioning the CWL in 10 – 20 years. What are your dreams and obstacles?
- What are the expectations of a leader?
- What are the benefits of being a leader?
During lively discussions on these questions, some points that came up in discussion were mentorship, support, a belief in yourself, self-confidence, sharing talents, quest for learning, enjoyment, rewarding, recognition, being able to make a difference, fulfillment, opportunity to inspire others, energizes, teaches good use of time and increases productivity, growth and development of skills, able to give back what CWL has given you, challenges, freedom to decide how things are done, sense of success, learn from mistakes, sense of self-worth, knowledge to share, fun and gratifying, making like long friends.
The process of recruiting leaders: watch for leaders all the time, at meetings, events in parish and community; develop leaders by giving them responsibilities of small tasks until comfortable, involve them in other levels of CWL; talk to them throughout the year, encourage, affirm them and their abilities; give them time to consider leadership; talk to other members suggesting they encourage them also; ask if you can nominate them; garner support prior to election; vote for them and support them when elected by offering to help.
The workshop ended with twelve members taking part in a prayer service. Monica Beavis gave the appreciation followed by the Celebration of the Eucharistic. Which ended the day.
